Nobuyoshi Araki.
From a commercial photographer to an artist with the photographic lens: The Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki was born in 1940 in Tokyo, where he also lives and works today.
After his studies of photography he at first worked as a commercial photographer. Inspired by the artistic black and white photographs of Brassai or Henri Cartier-Bresson, the artist started to take pictures of street life in the 1960's, often capturing very intimate moments in his surroundings.
The small-sized photographs dating back to this period are displayed for the first time in this exhibition; they depict everyday life in Japan but also personal moments in Araki's life. These early pictures are complemented by more recent photographs from a picture cycle that introduced him to a broader public: as a photographer of erotic scenes and female portraits.
The result is an exciting contrast that will thrill every visitor and not only dedicated photographers.
